Meteora

We could see the "rock forest" of Meteora from our hotel in Kalambaka. Located atop these mountains are several byzantine monasteries perched on their summits. Their history dates to the 14th century when monks sought refuge in cliff-side caves, then fled higher to build wooden shelters. Later these shelters were transformed into monasteries that stand today with a shrinking number of Greek Orthodox monks residing in them. |
