Day Three: Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic via Linz, Austria
We arrived in Linz, Austria late on Thursday evening. On Friday morning we boarded buses to cross the board into the Czech Republic and visit Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The centerpiece of the town is Cesky Krumlov Castle, which you will see pictured throughout. The castle was founded in the mid-13th century and remained privately owned - passed across various families - until it was handed over to the state in the mid-20th century. As you look at the photos you will see bears occupying the moat surrounding the castle. This is actually something that was done when moats were not filled with water and/or waste from the castle occupants. Yes, it seems cruel and awkwardly odd today. The Czech Republic became independent of Slovakia in January, 1993, although the countries remain close allies. |
