Day 8 - Viterbo & Orvieto
October 17th, 2017
Our final day began with a trip to Viterbo, known as the "City of the Popes" because many lived their during the Middle Ages. In fact, the first Papal Conclave took place at Viterbo, and it was here that the cardinals were locked in a room and, eventually, where the roof was removed to force them to chose a successor to Clement IV. We returned to Orvieto for an afternoon on our own. Kate and I took the opportunity to visit the Orvieto Underground, a glimpse of the city formed under the ancient streets of the hill town above. We saw a small part of the 1,200 tunnels, caves, quarries and cellars that made up this system and sustained the Orvieto economy. |
